This record date features two different
quartets of musicians. One from Little Rock and the other from Hot Springs,
The Little Rock group includes Brandon
Dorris on Tenor Saxophone, Chris Parker piano, Brian Brown drums and myself
on Bass and Vocals. We recorded five jazz standards: Blues on the Corner,
Four, I Fall in Love Too Easily, Scrapple from the Apple, and You Stepped
Out of a Dream.|
The Hot Springs band features Sim Flora on Trombone and Flute, Clyde Pound
piano, Paul Stivitts drums, and myself on Bass and Vocals. We laid down
five tracks as well: Body and Soul, Doxy, Love Came on Stealthy Fingers,
My Ship, and Summertime.
Although the songs may be familiar
to jazz aficionados, there are many surprises in store. For example; I wrote
original lyrics to the iconic McCoy Tyner tune Blues on the Corner, Sonny
Rollins' classic Doxy and the Charlie Parker standard Scrapple from the
Apple. Body and Soul is in 3/4 time with a bridge that swings in 4/4. Usually
heard as a ballad, I Fall in Love Too Easily is taken at a medium tempo
and swings really hard. Bob Dorough's ballad, Love Came on Stealthy Fingers
is a great tune that is seldom heard. Kurt Weil's My Ship, with Ira Gershwin's
lyrics, is played to a Latin groove. Summertime has a funky feel that includes
a cameo of the James Bond theme. And You Stepped Out of a Dream gives everyone
a chance to step out on their solos.
It was great playing with such awesome
musicians. I told them what I wanted and they exceeded my expectations.
I hope you enjoy listening to their superb performances on this record.
